2008 Second Semi-Final
Minor premiers Mount Gravatt came up
against second-placed Southport in the Second Semi-Final at Giffin Park,
Coorparoo.
Mount Gravatt went into the game having won their five previous encounters
against the Sharks, including the 2007 Grand Final. A westerly gale
blowing across the ground made kicking tricky for the players.
The fact that Southport led for almost the entire game belies the close,
exciting finish that eventuated. Having trailed by 10, 21 and 20
points respectively at the three changes, Mount Gravatt came home strongly
to hit the front for the first time with the clock having just ticked into
time-on in the last quarter.
Southport's reply to regain the ascendancy was swift, and their final goal
right on the siren made the final margin 8 points.
Final scores were:
Southport 14-14 (98)
Mount Gravatt 13-12 (90)
Southport therefore progressed to the
Grand Final, with the Vultures to face Morningside in the Preliminary Final.
