2008 First Semi-Final
The third-placed Lions came up against
fourth-placed Morningside in the First Semi-Final at Giffin Park, Coorparoo.
The Lions boasted plenty of AFL experience in Travis Johnstone, Rhan Hooper,
Robert Copeland and Colm Begley, and went into the game as firm favourites.
A strong northeasterly wind worth four to five goals favoured Morningside in
the opening quarter. Given the breeze, the Panthers’ quarter-time lead
of 19 points didn’t seem quite enough. By the long break, the Lions,
with a six-goal second quarter, had, not surprisingly, shot to a 22-point
lead.
Morningside replied with six goals of their own in the third quarter to lead
by 14 points at the last break, then played their best quarter of the match
(despite not kicking a goal) to keep the Lions at bay by 12 points at the
finish. Only one goal had been kicked at the northern end for the
whole match.
Injuries affected both teams. The Lions were without James
Polkinghorne, Joel Tippett and James Hawksley late in the game, whilst
Morningside lost skipper David Lillico for a large part of the second half,
having earlier had Kent Abey sidelined for a period with a dislocated
finger.
Final scores were:
Morningside 10-13 (73)
Suncoast Lions 8-13 (61)
Morningside therefore
progressed to the Preliminary Final, and in doing so, ended the Lions’
season.
