The Brisbane Lions are currently the only Queensland team taking part in the AFL competition, although this situation will change in 2011 with the admission of the Gold Coast FC, a move expected to create an intense rivalry between the two clubs.

Since 1993 Brisbane has played its home games at the Gabba, a famous venue situated about two kilometres southeast of the city centre and otherwise known as the Brisbane Cricket Ground.
